Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcarez have reached the semi-finals after winning their respective quarter-final matches. Now the two will face each other in the semi-finals for the second time in a row at Wimbledon. Alcarez won the semifinals of this tournament last year.
Meanwhile, in women’s singles, 28-year-old Croatia’s Donna Vekic has confirmed her place in the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time.
Medvedev showed world number-10 Yannick Siner the way out
Medvedev defeated world number 10 Yannick Sinner in the quarter-finals to make it to the semi-finals. He defeated Sinner 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
Medvedev lost the first set 6-7. He came back and won the second and third sets to consolidate his position in the match. Sinner won the fourth set 6-2 to make the last set a tough one. Medvedev turned the match in his favor by winning the last set 6-3.
During this match, Sinner had to seek treatment from his trainer and walked off the court in the third set. It was not immediately clear what happened to Sinner. His heart rate was also checked before going to the locker room. The 22-year-old Italian returned about 10 minutes later and started playing again.
Alcarez also reached the semifinals
Spain’s Carlos Alcarez has also reached the semi-finals. He won against American Tommy Paul. He defeated Paul 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. After losing the first set 5–7, Alcarez, the defending champion, came back and won all three sets in a row to clinch the match.
Vekich reached the semi-finals for the first time
Croatia’s 28-year-old Donna Vekic advanced to the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time after defeating New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 in the women’s singles quarterfinals. She is making her 43rd appearance at any Grand Slam, but has never reached the last four before.
Vekic became the second player from Croatia to reach the semifinals of Wimbledon. Before that, Mirjana Lucic reached the last four at the All England Club in 1999. Sun became the first New Zealander to reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in the Open Era.
