• Indian exporters are conscious of the quality standards of spices
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that Indian exporters are conscious of quality standards and exports of some spice commodities are very small and there is no need to exaggerate. Some of the goods that had problems paled in comparison to the country’s $56 billion exports of food and related goods.
Asked about the problem with consignment of some spices, Goyal said the media should refrain from exaggerating one or two incidents. There were some issues related to the company which are being addressed by the concerned authority – Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Goods from developed countries are also rejected due to quality issues.
India takes great pride in its quality standards. Indian industry and exporters are conscious of ensuring the highest quality and that is why our agriculture and related exports are continuously increasing. In May, spice exports fell by 20.28% to $361.17 million.
A decision will be taken by some group of ministers to lift the ban on some types of non-basmati rice after taking into account the demand-supply as well as price situation. Group of Ministers always take balanced decisions. The government has banned the export of non-basmati white rice from last July 2023 to boost domestic supply.

Asked about the government’s view on lifting the ban on rice exports, he said the decision is taken by a group of ministers. We meet from time to time, assess the agricultural production and also discuss factors like consumption patterns, price fluctuations in the retail and wholesale markets and then take a balanced decision.
